Corporazione della Nobiltà di San Marino
The Guild of Nobility of San Marino

The association was set up in October 2003 by a group of young people keen in everything concern the Medieval Age, the history of our land (San Marino and Romagna) and the historic re-enactment.

To carry out our passions we have understood very soon that we needed to build up our activities on a base of careful historical researches about everything we wanted to do. We decided that this base was absolutely necessary, so we obviously concentrate our attention on a particular historic period and on a specific geographical area, because it was unimaginable to try to rebuild a period of centuries in which developed many kind of historical, social, economic and artistic situations.

The geographical area was easily decided: obviously we chose the Republic of San Marino and the surroundings, which belonged to the Seigniories of Malatesta and Montefeltro, in the second half of 15th century.
Even the historical period was chosen without any doubts: it has been natural for us to focalize our attention on the years between 1460 and 1480, that were extremely interesting for the local history of Romagna, and when San Marino reached a turning point. In fact in 1463 there was the annexation of the Castles (which are small districts) of Serravalle, Fiorentino, Montegiardino and Faetano, that fixed the current boundaries of the Republic and paved the way towards the modern conception of our little State.
Then we chose the nobility as social class, that permitted us to represent a large variety of situations, more than the usual symbolic models (we don’t care to represent just a group of noble people devoted to food, hunting or courtship, we want recall almost the whole atmosphere of a Renaissance court, full of various situations, characters and activities definitely interesting also for a modern observer).

When we laid these bases, the consequent planning of our studies grew up spontaneously: the most important thing was to make clear to everyone that we wouldn’t have done a representation of the COMMON IDEA of Medieval Age, made of fixed forms and legends which television, movies and literature pass off as historic reality.

To give to the audience a representation that coincides as far as possible to the historic reality of that social class and our geographic area, it is necessary to have a solid knowing base made of study of documents (as dance manuals, theatrical scripts, behaviour manuals),iconographical sources (miniatures, frescos, sculptures) and archaeological sources.
A further important contribution came from established scholar in medieval studies of Italy and Europe, and from craftsmen specialized in philologically accurate reconstructions.

We intended with this kind of planning not only to made the historic re-enactment a way to entertain, but especially a privileged vehicle of teaching. Following the experimental archaeology statements we think that the living history can be a very good technique of learning, non only for “experts” in Medieval Age, but also for the newcomers.

This conviction make us both distinctive and qualified: in fact in these three years we managed to realize a totality of many situations particularly suggestive for the aesthetic features and for the didactic effect.
